In this article we will be covering some Myths and Facts around Goldfish in all of their varieties.

Goldfish will only grow to the size of the tank?

Myth: This is false, they can grow to 12” regardless of the size tank/pond they are in. However, as with most fish in some cases, they can stunt, but even this is usually unrelated to the size of the tank etc.

Do Goldfish have a 3-second memory?

Myth: This is false it is proven to be closer to 5 months if not longer! Hence, they know where the food comes from, even after a winter without food. When we are seine netting a pond of them, the 1st try is easy 2nd pretty easy. Then around the 3rd time they go jumping, ducking, diving every way possible just to avoid the net.

Are Fancy Goldfish just for aquariums?

Myth: This is also generally false we produce a lot of Fancy Goldfish on-site. Including Ranchu, Oranda and Ryukin all of which are grown on-site in outdoor tanks and mud ponds throughout all the seasons. They grow incredibly quickly too!

Are Goldfish easy to breed?

Fact: This is very true, Goldfish are very easy to breed given the right temperature and somewhere to lay the eggs, they will even breed in an aquarium! They also breed from a young age anywhere from 4” plus, which most Goldfish can reach in just 1 year of growth.

Are Goldfish easy to keep?

Fact: this is some what true they are indeed a hardy alternative to other pond fish, but they still need a good filter and the right size home etc. They can also live up to 40 years which is far longer than a lot of fluffier animals, so they still take a lot of commitment.

Can my Goldfish change in colour?

Fact: There are lots of colours of Goldfish available that have been achieved through breeding over the years. From Red to Black and Yellow to White. However, the reddest Goldfish could go white and the whitest Goldfish could turn yellow! This can be down to a number of factors like genetics, diet, light and Ph etc. Most Goldfish are in fact born Brown/Bronze and develop their colours from around 1.5-2 inches.
